CAPERS win the rematch against the Seahawks
SYDNEY, NS - The CAPERS win the rematch against the Seahawks 61-56 in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action on Saturday, January 24 in the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
The first quarter got going slowly for both teams with the CAPERS staying ahead by a narrow margin throughout, resulting in a score of 16-13 at the buzzer. Coming into the second, both teams were struggling to find the hoop with several missed shots on both sides. At the halfway mark, the CAPERS started to find their groove and began to extend their lead. The Seahawks countered but their effort kept them short of the CAPERS who were ahead 33-25 at the half.
The Seahawks came out hot in the third quarter outshooting the CAPERS and taking the lead aroung the 5-minute mark. The Seahawks went on a run to extend their lead by 7 at the end of the third. Hungry for a win, the CAPERS battled back in the fourth and narrowed the margin. They regained the lead with a jumper from Amanda Cruickshank and played tough defence right until the buzzer to pull off the win by a score of 61-56.
Serena Phillips posted 23 points and 7 rebounds for the Seahawks. Teamates Amelia Mitchell and Brooke Ledevehat both added 10.
Gabrièla Uyanze, the Subways of CBRM Player of the Game, posted an impressive 13 rebounds along with 4 points. Amanda Cruickshank netted 15 points with 6 rebounds and Monifa Beyde added 8 points and 12 rebounds.
The CAPERS are back in action at the Sullivan fieldhouse next weekend with games on both Friday and Saturday against Saint Mary's University. Friday, January 30 will be the Shoot for Cure event with games at 6pm and 8pm.
