CAPERS drop nailbiter to the Seahawks
Sydney, NS - The Memorial Seahawks edged past the CBU CAPERS to take the win by 3 points Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action on Friday, January 23 at the Sullivan Fieldhouse.
MUN took an early 9 point lead in the first quarter but the CAPERS offence kicked in and they began to close the gap. MUN stalled their effort and finished the quarter 21-12. The Seahawks set the pace early in the second but the CAPERS slowly crept up with some key 3-point shots from Alicia Bowering , the Subways of CBRM Player of the Game, Kristen Taylor and Amanda Cruickshank. The teams headed to the lockerroom with MUN with a slight lead 39-32.
The teams went back and forth on the board with the CAPERS narrowing the margin to 3 half way through the third. Late in the quarter CBU went on a run and pulled ahead 51-50 at the buzzer. The last stanza saw scoring at both ends to keep the teams on their toes. The Seahawks maintained a lead for until the 4 minute mark when the CAPERS oulled ahead again with a layup from Cruickshank. The teams were neck and neck until the buzzer finding the Seahawks ahead by 3 to take the win.
Serena Phillips had a game high of 17 points for MUN. Brooke Ledevehat added 12 points and both Amelia Mitchell and Adriana Garcia Sanchez de Rojas added 9 towards the win.
Amanda Cruickshank led the CAPERS with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Alicia Bowering added 13 points and Elizandra Costa netted 10.
The CAPERS will take on the Seahawks again tomorrow with the women's game at 1:00pm and the men's game at 3:00pm.
