Inaugural year of CAPERS Leadership Academy a success
The 2025–2026 academic year marked the successful launch and completion of the CAPERS Leadership Academy, a new initiative designed to support the development of varsity student-athletes both on and off the field.
The pilot program brought together a cohort of student-athletes who participated in monthly sessions focused on building leadership capacity, fostering personal growth, and preparing for life beyond sport. The initiative saw 10 student successfully complete program criteria which included: Cameron Clarke (Basketball), Haylie Clarke (Soccer), Aaron Cunningham (Basketball), Hailie Eisan (Track & Field), Lily Francois (Basketball), Blake Herve (Track & Field), Harvey Hughes (Soccer), Ellie Lancaster (Soccer), Kieran Maddock (Soccer), and Liai Tong (Basketball).
Sessions were delivered by a diverse group of contributors from across the CBU community and beyond, including faculty members Paul MacDougall and Sarah MacRae, Head Coach Matt Skinn, alumni Ryan Keliher, as well as Jordan Baker of the CEBL's Edmonton Stingers. This range of perspectives provided student-athletes with meaningful insight into leadership across sport, academics, and the professional environment.
Each session was designed to be interactive and reflective, encouraging participants to examine their roles as leaders within their teams and their community. Presenters shared practical experiences and facilitated discussions that helped student-athletes connect leadership concepts to real-world application.
As John Ryan, Director of Recreation and Athletics, notes, "Leadership training empowers our student-athletes to take ownership of their roles, communicate with purpose, and serve as positive influences within their teams and the broader community. More importantly, these programs help shape character. Student-athletes learn to lead with integrity, manage challenges with confidence, and support their peers in meaningful ways. These are not just athletic traits; they are essential life skills that prepare our student-athletes for success in academics, careers, and community leadership." Ryan also adds, "From my perspective, leadership training is not optional—it is a critical component of a well-rounded athletic program. When we invest in developing leaders, we are investing in the future of our student-athletes and the strength of our communities."
The success of the pilot program has established a strong foundation for future iterations of the CAPERS Leadership Academy which will see the program expanded for the 2026-2027 academic year.
The Athletics and Recreation Department would like to thank CBU Mental Health Counsellor, Chris Bourque and CAPERS Men's Basketball Head Coach, Matt Skinn, for their time spend developing and administering the program this year.
