WSOC: CAPERS & SEAHAWKS battle to 0-0 draw

(St. John's, NL) – Memorial's keeper Walsh put in an incredible performance to ensure a scoreless draw against the visiting first-place Capers.

Memorial's keeper Sydney Walsh (St. John's, NL) came up with eight exceptional saves to keep her team in the game. Cape Breton outshot Memorial eight to two for attempts on target.

In the 2ndminute of the game, CBU striker Rachel Leck (Pickering, ON) hit a volley off a corner straight to the top shelf, but Walsh came up and met it in the air with a dazzling punch over the net to safety. Walsh's first save set the tone of the rest of the game.

Memorial had some early momentum in the game with Nicole Torraville (St. John's, NL) spearheading the attack in the 10thminute, dribbling past two players and sending in a beautiful cross for Holly O'Neill (St. John's, NL), whose shot went wide.

Cape Breton turned up the intensity later in the half and had three more shots on target before the break. Attempts from CBU's Amelia Carlini (Ottawa, ON) and Ciera Disipio (Ottawa, ON) were dealt with by keeper Walsh, and both teams finished the first half tied up at 0-0.

The second half started with Cape Breton's Rebecca Lambke (Antigonish, NS) firing a bullet into the top corner, but was once again denied by Memorial's keeper.

Cape Breton did not stop their attack and had more attempts on target from Disipio and Carlini.

Inspired by this moment and into extra time, Torraville feigned past two defenders and sent in a gorgeous through ball to O'Neill. O'Neill took it on the dribble and tried to slide it past CBU keeper Rachel Yerxa (Mississauga, ON) but was denied. The game ended in a scoreless draw.

The CAPERS will next play host to Saint Mary's on October 12th at 5 pm. You can watch them live on AUStv.ca or follow the box scores at www.gocapersgo.ca
