Sydney, NS – The Cape Breton University Men's Soccer Program will begin their training camp on Saturday, August 26th. The CAPERS are the defending AUS Champions and finished last season with a 9-2-1 record. This was good enough for the 2nd seed during the AUS Championships. The CAPERS then went on to finish in 4th place at the U Sports National Championships losing to eventual winner Alberta in the semifinals. This season's addition of the CAPERS is looking to get back to the National Championships and take that next step to the medal podium.
Head Coach Deano Morley will be back behind the bench for his 4th year in charge of the CAPERS men's soccer. Morley earned his first AUS Championship as a head coach last season. Overall the CAPERS have captured 4 AUS titles.
The CAPERS are bringing 9 new players to camp to start the 2017 season. Euan Bald (East Lothian, UK), Erinn Butterfield-Tankard (Poinciana, UK), Anthony Cerina (LaSalle, QC), Tomiko Goater Smiths, BDA), Michael Gould (Linlithgow, UK), Jack Simpson (Redding, UK), Charlie Waters (Lancashire, UK), Lewis White (Musselburgh, UK) and Mitchell Wong (Bowmanville, ON) will join the defending champs. Many of the starting 11 will be returning from last year's squad. The returning players will be led once again by the captain and 4th year Stuart Heath (Belfast, IE) and upperclassmen and all-stars Daniel Pritchard (Nuneaton, UK) and Joel Eckert-Ayensa (Pulhaim, DE). There are some notable players not returning this season that will be difficult to replace. Long-time stalwart Andrej Rajic (Gatineau, QC) has graduated from the program and Robson Doolan (Nottingham, UK) and Jamie Wilson (Dunbar, SCO) have decided to take a year off.
The CAPERS will play an exhibition game against STFX in Antigonish Saturday, September 2nd at 1.00pm. The CAPERS are also holding "Train Like a CAPER" sessions on Monday, August 28th - 2-4pm (7 & Under) , Tuesday, August 29th - 2-4pm (8-11-year-olds) & Friday, September 1st - 9 am -1 pm (12-14-year-olds).
