Callaghan and CAPERS get huge win over Acadia

(Sydney, NS) – In Saturday evening basketball action, the Cape Breton Capers hosted the Acadia Axemen at the Sullivan Field House in Sydney. The CAPERS were able to weather a fast Acadia start to defeat the Axemen 94-84 in an important late-season game for both teams. 

 

The Axemen came out of the gate hitting 8 of 9 from behind the arc in the first quarter to jump out to the early lead. The 1st quarter ended with Acadia leading 27-21. The Axemen shooting went cold in the second quarter and the CAPERS took full advantage with a dominant 26-7 second quarter. The CAPERS were able to trade baskets for most of the 3rd and 4th quarters to maintain their double-digit lead. 

 

Acadia shot an incredible 68%, 17 of 25 from 3-point land on the night. They had 4 players hit double digits. Marcus Upshaw led the way with 19 points, Alec Muise had 14 pts and 5 rebounds, Eli Kraushar had 13 pts and Rowan Power chipped in 11pts in a balanced Acadia attack.

 

On the other end, the CAPERS second-year guard Jason Callaghan (Sydney, NS) has his best game of the season leading the team with 23 pts along with 5 assists. The AUS' second-leading scorer Osman Omar (Mississauga, ON) had 16 pts and 3 steals and Ibrahim Gosselin Diawara (Longueuil, QC) had 17 pts ad 7 rebounds.  The CAPERS defense played a huge roll in the win. The CAPERS had 9 steals and forced 18 turnovers.

 

The CAPERS held on to the important double-digit victory. The CAPERS and Axemen are currently tied in the standings and point differential may come into play if a tiebreaker scenario happens. 

 

The CAPERS Jason Callaghan was named the Subway Player of the Game. With the loss, Acadia not sits at 6-12 with 16 points and is in 5th place. The CAPERS victory moves them to 7-11 on the year with 16 points and tied with Acadia as both teams fight for the final playoff spots.
