Capers volleyballers ousted

The Cape Breton University Capers battled in a see-saw match, but ended up on the losing end of a 3-2 decision to the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds at the 2010 Subway Atlantic University Sport Women's Volleyball Championship at Saint Mary's, Friday.

Cape Breton dropped the first set to UNB by a 25-22 score, rebounded with a 25-23 win, then lost 25-19 in the third set, won the fourth 25-21 and then were upended in the fourth and final set by a 15-7 score.

"It's not the way to end our season, but I'm really proud of our players, we played a really, really high-level match and played a high-calibre match throughout," said Capers head coach Claude Lapré. "The fourth set is probably the most exciting set we've been part of in the AUS."

Barb Vriends led the Varsity Reds' offence with 14 kills. Jillan Blanchard posted 13, Tanya Paulin had 11 and Emma Hunt added 10. On defence, Megan Dudeck posted 17 digs, Hunt recorded 15 and Blanchard chipped in 14.

Vanessa St. Georges, player of the match for the Capers, recorded 14 kills in the loss, while Hilary Cummings chipped in 13. Kristen Ryan led the team on defence with 17 digs, Cummings recorded 13 and Sam Sanders added 11.

"It's a tough way to finish the season, but a nice match to be part of and hopefully, we can pick it up from there next year and play at that level all the time," said Lapré.

With the win, the Varsity Reds now move on to play the St. Francis Xavier X-Women at 4:30 p.m. in today's first semifinal. The second will see the Acadia Axewomen against the Saint Mary's Huskies at 7 p.m., after Acadia downed Dalhousie 3-0 in Friday's first quarter-final contest.

The semifinal winners will meet in the championship Sunday at 2 p.m.
