Capers sweep Subway Athletes of the Week honours

January 26, 2010 (HALIFAX, NS) - CIS scoring leader Kelsey Hodgson of the CIS No. 5 ranked Cape Breton Capers women's basketball team and Paris Carter of the CIS No. 4 ranked Cape Breton Capers men's basketball team have been selected as this week's Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for the period ending January 24th, 2010.

Kelsey Hodgson of the CIS No. 5 ranked Cape Breton Capers women's basketball team is the Atlantic University Sport Subway Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 24th, 2010. Hodgson, a fifth year guard from Fredericton, NB, led the Capers to a pair of road wins over the Saint Mary's Huskies this past weekend in Halifax to improve their regular season record to a perfect 13-0. On Friday, Kelsey led the Capers with 20 points and added 5 rebounds and 4 assists in a 74-59 victory. On Saturday, Hodgson, the current CIS scoring leader, exploded for 33 points, hauled down a team-high 10 rebounds and added 2 assists as the Cape Breton completed the sweep with a 60-48 win. With her 53-point weekend, Kelsey, who's 23.4 points per game average is once again leading the nation, also moved into ninth place all-time in AUS career scoring with 1451 career points. She is now just 47 points shy of Janice Moseychuck's CBU school record of 1498 points which was established over her four year career between 1994-95 and 1999-00. Hodgson also leads the conference this season in free throw percentage (89.7 per cent) and steals (3.23 per game).

Paris Carter of the CIS No. 4 ranked Cape Breton Capers men's basketball team is the Atlantic University Sport Subway Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 24th, 2010. Carter, a fourth year guard from Baltimore, MD, had an outstanding weekend for the Capers in back-to-back road wins over the CIS No. 10 ranked Saint Mary's Huskies in Halifax. In Friday night's opener, Paris scored 21 points, including the game winning three-pointer as the Capers came back from a 13-point fourth quarter deficit to squeak out an 87-84 victory. He also hauled down 4 rebounds and added 3 assists in the win. In Saturday afternoon's rematch, Carter posted another strong outing, scoring 23 points to go with 6 rebounds and 3 assists in a convincing 102-75 victory. The Capers improved to 10-1 this season and currently sit in first place in the Atlantic conference standings with 28 points. Paris, who played previously at New Mexico State University, is second in team scoring this season with an average of 14.3 points per game.
