(Sackville, NB) - The Cape Breton University Club Rugby team ended its dream season as the Maritime Division 2 University Champions with a 24-19 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties on Sunday afternoon in Sackville. The championship game was tight from start to finish, with MT.A drawing first blood in the opening 10 minutes. The teams traded scores and headed into the half with the Mounties leading the CAPERS 14-12. CBU was able to build up a second-half lead of 24-19 to head into the final 10 minutes of the game. CBU was on the back foot within 20 metres of its try line and Mt. A came very close to scoring several times, but CBU was able to hold the defensive line. In the dying seconds of the game, Mt. A managed to finally breakthrough for a couple of meters but was quickly closed off and before reaching the try line, dropped the ball which forced a turnover and the end of the game. It was a dramatic finish to a tough battle between two evenly matched teams.
Although this Maritime Championship trophy has only been around since 2010, the Championship itself has been around for much longer and. Prior to this year, it was most recently won by CBU in 2007. The game is played every year between the winner of the NS championship and the winner of the NB/PEI championship.
